AS ONE – THE INSPIRATION
‘I have invigorated my life-long affair with Australian nature through the creation of a fine art collection that brings everything together. An exhibition and series of public events through which I can share my journeys – my emotions – my creativity – all combined – all ‘as one’.
The works at this exhibition, and those in the expanded online galleries, are an expression of my empathy for the suffering of anxiety and depression that many people are facing. During my countless blissful hours in nature, and during the creation of this collection, a heightened passionate desire has evolved to inspire others to explore the value of nature connection. Collectively, the pieces highlight ‘connecting’ experiences drawn from my 50-year career as a photographer of Australia.
It is my wish that the AS ONE exhibition – both online and in real-world public spaces – act as a catalyst for conversation that blends nature connection with mental wellness. My life has been a living example of nature connection providing solace and life enhancement during some very tough times.
As part of my ongoing commitment, a percentage of the proceeds from the sale of this collection will be directed towards Bush Heritage Australia and the Queensland Alliance For Mental Health Inc. This blend is not just for the duration of the Powerhouse Exhibition, it is my wish to expand the conversation and action nationally. Together, we plan to work with Bush Heritage Australia and ‘mental well being’ organisations towards the life enhancement of all living things and are planning to travel the event nationally.’
Stories Of Connection
During exhibitions, Steve displays the story behind each print. When prints are purchased the stories are provided to the investor.
Here is one example –
‘AS ONE – Like a giant maze spilling across the landscape, a myriad of minor creeks find their way to the lowest point where they become ‘as one’. A great metaphor for what has now become the ‘river of consciousness’. People begin a movement independently, which then forms one powerful collective. In this case, the many tributaries combine as Warburton Creek which then takes a 400 kilometre journey culminating in the flooding of Lake Eyre. The change the water brings to this arid landscape is one of the most stunning natural events I have ever witnessed.’

Protecting Our Natural Heritage
Steve believes, “If capturing the natural world on your camera is important to you, then it makes sense to protect it. You can’t immerse yourself in the diversity of nature if it is no longer there”. Towards this objective Steve and his team at Nature Connect have joined up with leading privately funded, non-profit conservation organisation, Bush Heritage Australia. Together, they are now setting out to motivate the conversation about how connecting with nature benefits wild places and their inhabitants and may heal us in times of anxiety and depression.
Towards this end Steve is now representing Bush Heritage Australia as an ambassador and a percentage of the proceeds from the sales of this fine art collection will be directed towards Bush Heritage Australia and their conservation programs across Australia.

Enhancing Our Mental Health
Steve and the team at Nature Connect understand the power of connecting to the natural world – not just to inspire our creativity – but also to calm and heal.
Steve believes “Photography gets us seeing the world around us through different eyes. It takes us outside our headspace. It is too easy to get caught up in what I call ‘mind stories’ – the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves – and they are often negative. Looking through a lens forces you to change your perspective on life – even just for a moment. And if what you are focused on is naturally beautiful and inspiring – this can perpetually enhance your life.”
“Connecting people, or re-connecting them, to the natural world around them is one way we can help. To support the ‘AS ONE’ focus of this exhibition, we are affiliating with theMental Illness Fellowship Queensland. These are people, along with their many associated bodies, who also believe that Nature can help people reconnect to themselves and then to their community. A percentage of the proceeds from the sales of this collection will also be directed to this alliance.
